Fossil is a German drama about Michael, a 62-year-old open-cast mine worker who has spent four decades maintaining a massive bucket-wheel excavator. For Michael, the mine is far more than a workplace—it has become the foundation of his identity and his entire life. When plans to phase out coal threaten the future of the mine, he refuses to accept the changes and begins fighting against the closure.
Michael tries to convince his colleagues to protest against the rapid transition, arguing that the mine represents jobs, prosperity and energy security. But his strongest conflict develops inside his own family. His wife Miri struggles to understand his increasingly obsessive behavior, while his daughter Anja is an environmental activist who supports an even earlier end to coal mining. As the opposing positions harden, Michael gradually loses the support of both his colleagues and his family.
Eventually, Michael takes increasingly desperate measures to save the workplace that has defined his existence, even chaining himself to the facility in an attempt to prevent the destruction of his excavator. His fight ultimately forces him to confront a much more personal question: what remains when the work that gave his life meaning disappears?
