Description: Gavagai is a 2025 German-French drama written and directed by Ulrich Köhler. The story follows Maja Tervooren (Maren Eggert), a German actress playing Medea in a radical modern adaptation of the ancient Greek tragedy, filmed in Senegal by French director Caroline Lescot (Nathalie Richard). Amid the exhausting production, cultural misunderstandings and growing tensions over artistic representation, Maja begins an affair with her co-star Nourou Cissokho (Jean-Christophe Folly), who plays Jason. Their relationship offers temporary relief from the pressures of filming, but unresolved personal and professional conflicts remain beneath the surface. Months later, they reunite at the film’s premiere in Berlin. When Nourou is singled out by a security guard and asked to prove his identity, Maja intervenes and demands an apology. Although she believes she is standing up against racism, Nourou questions her response and sees the dismissed guard as a convenient scapegoat. Their disagreement exposes deeper differences in how they understand prejudice, responsibility and solidarity. Anna Diakhere Thiandoum plays Aïta, while Demet Gül portrays Lale Meffert, and Mateusz Malecki appears as Kolakowski. Blending the ancient tragedy of Medea with contemporary social tensions, Gavagai examines colonial legacies, privilege, artistic freedom and the limits of good intentions when people fail to understand one another.
