In September 2007, eighteen-year-old Swedish student Fredrika “Fred” Sjöberg moves to Trieste with her father and enrolls in a local technical high school for her final year. Played by Stella Wendick, Fred is confident, curious and unwilling to conform, but she immediately finds herself in an unusual position: she is the only girl in a class full of boys. Her arrival attracts considerable attention and makes it difficult for her to find her place among classmates who are fascinated by the newcomer.
Fred gradually becomes close to three childhood friends, each with a very different personality. Giacomo Covi plays Antero, the sensitive and thoughtful member of the group; Pietro Giustolisi portrays Pasini, a charismatic flirt who hides his own emotional pain; and Samuel Volturno plays Mitis, the warm and protective friend who often tries to keep the group together. What begins as friendship develops into a complicated emotional triangle when Fred and Antero discover that their feelings for each other are mutual.
As the school year progresses, jealousy and unspoken desires begin to threaten the friendship between the three boys. Fred must navigate not only her first experiences of love and independence but also the pressure of being treated differently because she is a young woman in a male-dominated environment. Her presence gradually exposes the insecurities and hidden emotions of those around her.
Directed by Laura Samani and loosely based on the 1929 novella by Giani Stuparich, Un Anno di Scuola is a coming-of-age drama about adolescence, friendship, first love and the difficulties of finding one's identity. The film premiered in the Orizzonti section of the 2025 Venice Film Festival, where Giacomo Covi won the Orizzonti Award for Best Actor.
